DK has announced the passing of the Sunday Times bestselling author and science communicator Dr Stuart Farrimond.
Their statement read: "It is with great sadness that DK announces the passing of Dr Stuart Farrimond, a cherished author and a respected member of both the DK community and scientific community at large."
Farrimond was a medical doctor, science communicator and food-science expert, who wrote multiple bestselling books including The Science of Cooking (2017), The Science of Spice (2018), The Science of Living (2020) and The Science of Gardening (2023). His contributions to the Science of... series have sold more than one million copies worldwide and have been translated into 19 languages.
He was a regular on popular BBC science TV and radio shows and at public events, and his writing has appeared in national and international publications, including the Independent, the Daily Mail, BBC Science Focus and New Scientist.
The announcement added: "Dr Farrimond succeeded in bringing complex science to life for readers, with his unique blend of expert knowledge and curiosity shining through on every page." His latest book, The Science of Flavour, is set to be published posthumously in July of this year.
DK’s editorial director Cara Armstrong said: "Dr Stu was not only a prolific writer but also a passionate advocate for science and education. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with readers across the world, and his legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work. He will be greatly missed by the scientific community and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Literary agent Jonathan Pegg added: "The sincerity of Dr Stu’s mission to make science accessible shone through everything he wrote. He had an unerring instinct for the everyday relevance of the highest and driest science, never missing a chance to bust a popular myth with his trademark blend of passionate erudition and wry humour. His courage was an inspiration, too; he will be sorely missed."
