Bafta-winning actor Toby Jones will read the audiobook of John le Carré’s final novel Silverview, which publishes on 14th October 2021.
Silverview was was the only complete, full-length, novel left unpublished at the time of the author's death in December 2020.
It tells the story of Julian Lawndsley, who has renounced his high-flying job in the City for a simpler life running a bookshop in a small English seaside town. But only a couple of months into his new career, his evening is disrupted by a visitor. Edward, a Polish émigré living in Silverview, the big house on the edge of town, seems to know a lot about Julian's family and is rather too interested in the inner workings of his modest new enterprise. When a letter turns up at the door of a spy chief in London warning him of a dangerous leak, the investigations lead him to this quiet town by the sea.
Jones, whose many screen credits include appearing as Percy Alleline in the 2011 adaptation of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, will narrate the book for Penguin Random House Audio. The audiobook publishes simultaneously with the Viking hardback and e-book.
Jones said said: "I’m honoured to read this slippery, witty and ultimately poignant novel. Here again le Carré explores the long-term cost of idealism, secrecy and deception on both family and friendship. The propulsive undercover operations are never allowed to compromise the humane accounting of his characters' debt to the past. Silverview is a plangent, valedictory tale from a masterful storyteller."
