Simon & Schuster Children’s Books has pre-empted full-colour graphic novel series Kitty Quest by cartoonist Phil Corbett.
Ali Dougal, publishing director, and Lowri Ribbons, editor, bought UK and Commonwealth rights for two books from Helen Boyle at Pickled Ink. S&S Children’s Books will publish the first book, Kitty Quest, simultaneously with PRH's Razorbill imprint in the US, launching in paperback in June 2021, with book two following in summer 2022.
The synopsis states: "Kitty Quest is a laugh-out-loud adventure set in the magical land of Pawdor. Perigold and Woolfrik are two down-on-their-luck cats in need of some extra cash, so they decide to become professional monster slayers. Only thing is, they have no experience of either monsters or slaying."
Dougal said: "Graphic novels are on the cusp of breaking through in the UK. I’ve been looking for the perfect series for the S&S list since joining earlier this year and we’ve found it in Kitty Quest. Cats, monsters, a zany, psychedelic world, and a brilliant creative talent based here in the UK. What more could we ask for?’
Corbett is based in Brighton, and has previously worked for the toy, game and tech industries; his list of clients has included Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney, Nintendo and Sony PlayStation. Corbett was the last person to write and illustrate the adventures of one of the oldest comic characters in the world, Korky the Cat in the "Dandy". He said: "I’m really excited that Kitty Quest has found such a, dare I say, PURRfect home in the UK at Simon & Schuster. I'm looking forward to working with the team next year."
