Scholastic has apologised for a children’s book that omits Israel from a map of the Middle East.
The book, Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt, published in September, is part of the Geronimo Stilton children’s series and tells the story of journalists going on a treasure hunt in Egypt. A map showing the region at the start of the book does not include Israel.
Scholastic released a statement apologising for the error, saying: “Scholastic is immediately stopping shipment on this title, revising the map, and going back to reprint. We regret the omission which was in the original version of the book published in Italy and was translated by our company for English language distribution.”
The Geronimo Stilton series was first published by Ezizioni Piemme in Italy in 2000. Scholastic has been publishing the English version of the series since February 2004. Thea Stilton is the younger sister of Geronimo Stilton, who works as a journalist for fictional newspaper the Rodent’s Gazette.
