Razorbill, the teenage imprint of Penguin Children's, has done the first English language publishing deal with self-published author Tammara Webber.
Editorial director Shannon Cullen bought UK and Commonwealth rights in six books, including Webber's hit novel Easy, from Kate McLennan at Abner Stein, on behalf of Lauren Abramo of Dystel & Goderich.
Easy, and three titles in Webber's Between the Lines series, will be out as Razorbill e-books on 13th September, with print editions to follow in early 2013.
Webber has been self-publishing her books - college romances aimed at a crossover readership, a genre which has now been named "New Adult" - since 2011, hitting the New York Times e-book bestseller list with Easy, which has sold more than 150,000 copies according to Razorbill.
Cullen said: "Her writing is contemporary and perfectly pitched, with a voice that genuinely appeal to both teen and adult readers. We have noticed the emergence of this New Adult genre in recent months, especially in self-publishing, and are delighted to be publishing one of the bestselling authors in this area. New Adult titles tend to be sizzling romances set at college or university; the perfect setting for a genuine crossover audience. At Penguin we have the breadth to speak to a wide audience and capture both YA and adult fans, who we know have already been drawn to Tammara's fantastic books in big numbers."
Webber said she was "thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Razorbill to bring my novels to a broader UK reading market," adding: "Penguin is recognized by readers as a provider of quality literature, and is a widely-respected leader in the global publishing world."
