PRH's Michael Joseph has bought debut novel A Kindness by Regan Rose, recently pre-empted within 24 hours of submission by Penguin in the US.
Editorial director Jillian Taylor acquired UK and Commonweath rights (excluding Canada) from Helen Heller at the Helen Heller Agency, in a two-book deal.
“The story of a family torn apart by an alleged assault, A Kindness explores themes of justice, doubt, and what happens when loyalty is tested to its limits,” reads the synopsis. “It follows married couple Tony and Julia, whose most deeply held principles are challenged when Nick, Tony’s much-loved younger brother, accuses a man of date rape.”
Taylor said A Kindness was a “phenomenal” novel. “Like Netflix’s 'Unbelievable', A Kindness confronts important, compelling subject matter deftly and thoughtfully,” she said. “It is also a story that delivers twist after twist. As we discover what really happened to Nick, we learn how the lives of those closest to him were changed in ways that never could have been predicted.” She promised: “This novel will be igniting book club debates for years to come.”
A Kindness will be published in 2021, simultaneously with the US and Canada.
