Jerwood sponsorship for Fiction Uncovered

Fiction Uncovered, the annual prize highlighting works by British writers, is to be renamed the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize, with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation pledging £5,000 to each selected author.

The promotion, launched in 2010 and run by The Literary Platform, celebrates the best of contemporary British fiction by selecting eight books to highlight over the summer months. The Jerwood Charitable Foundation has pledged a total of £80,000 to the prize for 2014 and 2015, with prize money going direct to authors.

Shonagh Manson, director of Jerwood Charitable Foundation, said: “It is an immense challenge to maintain a livelihood through fiction writing. “This has never been more keenly felt than now, with diminishing resources available from publishers, fierce market competition and changes in digital distribution all taking their toll on some of the most talented writers of a generation.

“Fiction Uncovered has developed a unique and informed platform to give the best writers an urgent boost, and we are proud to launch the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize in 2014 and 2015, through which 100% of our funding will be awarded directly to writers.”

Sophie Rochester, c.e.o. of The Literary Platform and co-founder of Fiction Uncovered, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that the Jerwood Charitable Foundation wants to support British fiction writers with this invaluable prize money, which will develop the work of Fiction Uncovered in 2014 and 2015.

“We couldn’t have got to this stage without ongoing support from Arts Council England, and we're proud that the newly formed Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize will be one of the biggest overall prize funds dedicated exclusively to British fiction writers.”

This year’s prize
is open to self-published authors for the first time, as well as traditionally published books.

Submissions can be of all kinds, from novels to short story collections to graphic novels.

The deadline for the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize has been extended to 3rd March, with the selected books will be announced in June.

Among the books included in last year’s Fiction Uncovered promotion were The Heart Broke In by James Meek (Canongate), Secrecy by Rupert Thompson (Granta) and Black Bread, White Beer by Niven Govinden (HarperCollins).

The Jerwood Charitable Foundation also backs the annual Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Awards for Non-fiction.
