HarperNonFiction has acquired Challenge Accepted!, a "part-memoir, part-comedy routine, part-advice manual" by actor, writer, comedian Celeste Barber.
UK and British Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada and ANZ) were bought by editorial director Katya Shipster from Anna Carmichael at Abner Stein, on behalf of Yfat Reiss Gendell at Foundry Literary + Media (in partnership with Lisa Mann of Lisa Mann Creative Management and Trevor Engelson and Steve Fisher of Underground).
Barber is best known for her experiment, started in January 2015, to see what it would look like for an average person to photograph herself doing rich people things. The hashtag #celestechallengeaccepted gained traction and shenow has 5.5m combined social media followers.
Pitched as a reminder not to take life too seriously, in Challenge Accepted! Barber will be "calling out our ridiculous obsession with celebrity Instagram culture" and "showing us how life should be done", according to HarperNonFiction. Topics include the secrets to love, friendship, family and marriage and how to deal with life's many challenges, with coverage extending to why she checks the bath for sharks, how Nutella quite literally shaped who she is as a woman, and why being famous on Instagram is like being rich in Monopoly.
Shipster said: "I’ve been a huge fan of Celeste’s for ages, so it’s thrilling to publish her fantastically funny memoir in the UK. Celeste is truly one of a kind, and her writing in this energetic book is as hilarious, insightful and universally relatable as she is online."
Challenge Accepted! is Barber's first book. It will publish in hardback on 27th September 2018.
