Hachette Children’s Group (HCG) will next year publish a page in adult titles from The Orion Publishing Group asking the reader to encourage children to read.
The advert, which will be published in more than 400,000 books by 22 Orion authors, asks readers for help to create readers of the future by sharing, borrowing, reading, buying or talking about a book with a child in their life.
The authors who have agreed to have an advert in their books include Ian Rankin, Joanne Harris, Julie Cohen, Leila Aboulela, Antonia Fraser and Eric Idle. The first book published to feature the advert will be Victoria Aveyard’s War Storm, which will be published on the 21st February 2019.
Hilary Murray Hill, c.e.o. of HCG, said: “It’s encouraging to think we could reach 400,000 readers and we hope this simple, direct message inspires of them to read to a child they know, talk to them about how much reading means to them or buy a book for a child.”
“With the latest statistics telling us that 10% of children don’t have a book of their own in their home, rising to 13% in disadvantaged families, the impoverished reading lives of many children in this country are alarming. I am hugely grateful to the Orion authors for supporting HCG so enthusiastically. Our mission to get more children reading is partly a social responsibility but will also help to ensure a sustainable future for our industry. We need to come together in every way we can to create readers for tomorrow.”
Murray Hill first outlined her plan when giving the keynote at The Bookseller Children’s Conference in 2017. At the time she said: “We must promote the benefits of children’s reading to adults, via adult books. If every mass market adult paperback contained a punchy message about the value of children’s reading, it would reach a vast audience.”
Katie Espiner, m.d. of Orion said: “We are really proud to be working with Hilary and HCG on this initiative and extremely grateful to our authors for their involvement in promoting this positive message to adult readers. We have a shared concern around the levels of reading for pleasure and literacy in the UK and it’s in all of our interests to act to improve this picture.”
HCG and Orion are both part of Hachette UK.
