Egmont will next year publish the first book in a children’s adventure series written by Katherine Woodfine, arts project manager at Booktrust.
The Clockwork Sparrow is set in a department store and follows the adventures of Sophie, who finds herself implicated in the theft of a precious object.
Egmont’s fiction editorial director Ali Dougal said: “The Clockwork Sparrow is an absolute joy of a book, transporting the reader to a world of heady glamour offset by a murky criminal underground. It's an irresistible mix of Mr Selfridge and Nancy Drew.”
Egmont won the world English rights for two books in a four-publisher auction from Louise Lamont at LBA. The Clockwork Sparrow will publish in the second half of 2015 and a second book will follow less than a year later.
