Independent academic publisher Boydell & Brewer has appointed James Powell as its new c.e.o.
Current c.e.o. Peter Clifford is stepping down after 13 years at the helm, having led the company through a period of "substantial change and development". He leaves to pursue his non-executive and consultancy interests and will be succeeded by Powell, currently director of publisher relations at ProQuest.
In 2015, the company transitioned from private ownership to an Employee Ownership Trust which it said had "secured its long term future". This was followed by a distribution deal with Wiley in the UK extending its reach further into international markets.
Powell joins Boydell & Brewer having held previous posts in academic publishing, including as m.d. at Pickering & Chatto Publishers. He will assume his new role, based in the Suffolk office, on 3rd September 2018.
Powell said: “It is my firm belief that the humanities need strong independent publishers. Boydell & Brewer is an outstanding example of this and I am honoured to be appointed as their c.e.o. I am determined that the next chapter will be one of continuity in terms of editorial excellence but also of change as we expand our publishing and extend our impact and reach.”
Jenny Pearce, c.f.o. and interim c.e.o., said: “The Board and Trustees look forward to working with James as we take the company forward, with new commercial and publishing developments to strengthen the company’s position. We thank Peter for his many years of dedication as c.e.o. and skillful leadership through a challenging period of transition.”
Boydell & Brewer will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year.
