Jonathan Douglas, head of policy development at the Museums, Libraries and Archives council, will take over as director of the National Literacy Trust in January 2007. He will replace Neil McClelland, who announced in May that he would be leaving the NLT which he has directed since it was founded in 1993.
Douglas has been a member of the NLT advisory panel for two years, and in 1998/99 worked with the NLT on the National Year of Reading. He said: "I am thrilled and excited to be joining the Trust. Literacy is a national priority. Taking the Trust's vision forward is an honour and a challenge."
Before working at MLA, Douglas was adviser for Youth and Schools Libraries at the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, and has worked in Westminster libraries as a children's librarian and children's services team leader.
Chair of Trustees Amanda Jordan said: "We are confident that, building on the excellent work that Neil has started, Jonathan will ensure that the National Literacy Trust continues to make a vital contribution to building a more literate nation."
