Major Books has acquired Treasury of Vietnamese Folk Tales by Nguyen Đổng Chi. Publisher Kim Trần acquired world rights from Nguyễn Đổng Chí’s estate, with the book set to publish in March 2026.
It will include 11 stories from "the definitive anthology of Vietnamese folk tales", translated for the first time in English by Lan Võ and Nguyễn Bình, accompanied by original artwork from Yoto Carnegie winner Jeet ZDũng, known for his work on the children’s picture book Saving Sorya (Dial Books).
Of the acquisition, the publisher said: "As folklores and fairy tales are instrumental to the formative imagination and learning of traditional cultures, one of our main goals with the Treasury is providing an alternative from Grimms and Andersens in the book market.
"In particular, we wish to dedicate this book to Vietnamese children all over the world, who can then one day carry on to pass these tales to their own children, with or without the barrier of knowing the Vietnamese language."
Major Books is an independent publishing house that focuses exclusively on English translations of Vietnamese writing. Previous titles include PEN Translates winner Water: A Chronicle by Nguyễn Ngọc Tư and The Tale of Kiều by Nguyễn Du.
