Jess Hayman’s ‘heartwarming’ Animals at Work goes to Hachette Children’s Group
Hachette Children’s Group has acquired a “heartwarming” book of true animal stories, Animals at Work, from debut author-illustrator and print company owner Jess Hayman.
Lucy Twist, commissioning editor, colour non-fiction at HCG, acquired world rights in all languages from Caroline Walsh at David Higham Associates.
Animals at Work invites readers aged 7+ to get to know the different jobs that animals can have, from helping people as therapy pets to carrying out spy work, as they meet photographer pigeons, geese guards, post office cats and even electrician ferrets.
Twist said: “When Jess’ submission came in, we loved it immediately. With her adorable animal characters and use of risograph printing to create a unique style, Jess is an exciting new talent and one to watch.”
Hayman said: “I am beyond thrilled to be working with Hachette Children’s Group on my debut book. The idea for Animals at Work was born when I read about ferrets laying electrical cables, bats protecting ancient books and rats detecting landmines. I started researching other work done by animals and was continually amazed by their incredible skills. I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful team to help bring this book to life and hope that readers will enjoy discovering the different jobs done by animals all over the world.”
Animals at Work will be published in hardback on 21st May 2026 under the LKP Children’s imprint, priced £16.99.
