Ebury Self has swooped for We Can Do Hard Things, “a moving exploration of the 20 essential human questions” from sisters and bestselling authors and award-winning podcast hosts Glennon and Amanda Doyle and Glennon’s wife Abby Wambach, the retired US Women’s national football team icon.
Publishing director Olivia Morris acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Fiona Baird at WME, on behalf of Margaret Riley King, with Whitney Frick at The Dial Press bagging North American rights. We Can Do Hard Things will be published under Vermilion, continuing the imprint’s relationship with Glennon Doyle, whose bestselling memoir Untamed was released in 2020. The Dial Press and Vermilion will simultaneously publish the title on 8th May.
The book has the same title as the authors’ long-running podcast. Glennon Doyle said: “When you travel through a new country, you need a guidebook. When you travel through love, heartbreak, joy, parenting, friendship, uncertainty, ageing, grief, new beginnings – life – you need a guidebook, too. We Can Do Hard Things is the guidebook for being alive."
Ebury said: “Recently, Doyle was diagnosed with anorexia. Wambach and Amanda have always been Glennon’s compasses, but they too were facing their own challenges: Amanda had been diagnosed with breast cancer and Abby’s beloved brother had died. For the first time, they were all lost at the same time. So they turned toward the only thing that’s ever helped them find their way: deep, honest conversations with other brave, kind, wise people – their wayfinders.
“They asked each other, their dearest friends and 118 of the world’s most brilliant wayfinders: As you’ve travelled life’s roads – breaking patterns, falling in and out of love, making and keeping friends, forgiving yourself and others, finding joy and purpose – have you collected any wisdom that might help us find our way?”
The trio “collected the transformative wisdom that helped them through” into We Can Do Hard Things. It is pitched by Ebury as “a place to turn when you feel clueless and alone, when you need clarity in the chaos, or when you want wise company on the path of life”.
Morris said: “All who know Glennon recognise the rallying cry that is We Can Do Hard Things. We’re thrilled to be teaming up with her again alongside Abby and Amanda on this beautifully designed life-changing gift and guide that will empower us in the toughest moments.”
