Del Rey has won CM Basma’s epic fantasy debut, The Fallen Sun, in a "significant" six-figure deal.
Senior commissioning editor Alexa Allen-Batifoulier acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in a two-book deal from Gyamfia Osei at Andrew Nurnberg following a "fierce" auction. North American rights were secured by Alison Romig at Delacorte Press in another six-figure deal. Del Rey and Delacorte Press will publish The Fallen Sun as a lead global title in spring 2027. Osei described the novel as a "blistering epic fantasy" and a "stunning debut".
Inspired by Middle Eastern folklore and Lebanese culture, the novel follows Laena Redan, who harnesses the magic of her three Sky Folk ancestors.
The synopsis continues: "But having been born on the poisoned island of Persiphyl, she has been a captive of the human king for her entire life, her magic, and the magic of her people, suppressed. When the poison begins to afflict her little brother, Laena is forced to act. She plans an escape across the perilous sunken border. Only after being rescued by a hidden resistance does she uncover the depth of her power on a land free from poison and learns the lengths she is willing to go to tear the human king from his throne."

Basma said: “I am beyond thrilled to be working with Del Rey UK and Delacorte Press! The Fallen Sun has been a project of the heart for so many years now, and finally finding it a home that understands precisely what it intends to do is a surreal feeling I’m not sure I’ll ever get over. At a time where Arab voices are being repeatedly silenced, it’s an absolute honour to give this novel a voice to speak with.”
Allen-Batifoulier said: “We’re so excited to publish CM Basma’s debut. From the very first page, we were drawn in by CM’s ambitious and immersive world-building, from the haunting creatures to the thrilling magic system. It’s a fresh and utterly unique debut of impressive scope, full of a rich culture, and packed with nonstop adventure, a vengeful FMC, and an unforgettable cast of characters readers can’t help but root for. We can’t wait for everyone to meet the fiery, heartfelt Laena and her vengeful quest.”
