Bedford Square Publishers has bought The Missing Year, a “heartfelt and charming” contemporary romance by Owen Nicholls.
Editor Rebecca Weigler negotiated the world English language rights deal with Hayley Steed at Janklow and Nesbit UK, with publication scheduled for summer 2027.
The novel is described as a “delightful and fresh take on the close proximity trope”, following two neighbours who wake after a one-night stand only to find that they have been in a committed relationship for the past year with no recollection of how they got there. Trying to figure out what may have led to this moment, Fiona and Dev must unravel the mystery of their eventful evening, while also learning more about each other and their future in the process.
Owen Nicholls is an author and screenwriter. His first two romantic fiction novels, Love, Unscripted and Perfect Timing were published by Hachette in the UK, Penguin Random House in the US and HarperCollins in Canada.
Weigler commented: “Fiona and Dev’s story is full of so much joy and heart. This novel had me hooked from the very start and I am thrilled to be working with Owen.” Steed added: “Owen is one of my very favourite writers and this gorgeous love story is for fans of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ or anyone who has ever wondered ‘how did I end up here?’’
Nicholls said: “I’m over the moon to share The Missing Year with readers next summer. Dev, Fiona, and their family have been a part of my life for half a decade now and I can’t wait for you to meet them. I’m delighted to be working with Rebecca and exceptionally grateful to Hayley for finding the perfect home for this story.”
