Gerry Johnson: Man at the top

When Gerry Johnson left food wholesaler Booker last year, where he was m.d., he drew up a shortlist for his next job. It was a very short list, with only two jobs on it, and one was managing director of Waterstone's. He won't reveal the other, but it probably wasn't running Ottakar's.

So why Waterstone's? First, it was straight retail, which he preferred to a wholesaler such as Booker. Second, it was a brand respected by customers, and third, from his experiences as a customer, he thought the instore teams were excellent.
