My Job in 5: Lottie Chase, Export Sales Executive, Quercus Books

Describe your role

I manage accounts throughout Europe; these could be distributors, bookshops or sales reps. I split my time between being in the Quercus office and travelling abroad to visit my customers to ensure they are getting the right books stocked and promoted.

What do you like best about your role?

I love talking to people about our books. I try to make sure I read as many of them as possible. In our export team we all read different sections of the current list in our own time and then discuss all of the plots together so we can talk to our customers confidently about the target audience, plot hooks and author. I also really enjoy working with booksellers to promote an author.

Which new titles are you working on at the moment?

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair has caused a huge wave of interest in the export market. Many of my European customers have been anticipating the translation of this novel from French to English. Coming out this summer is The Director by David Ignatius who also wrote the incredible thriller Body of Lies.

Where in your markets can you see new growth?

Across Europe there seems to be a cautious but noticeable increase in sales. Most people have been hugely affected by the economic crisis but compared to 12 months ago, there does seem to be a tentative step forward to recovery. French crime is hugely popular across Europe now and is definitely giving Scandinavian crime a run for its money.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work in the industry?

I would definitely recommend work experience in different areas, so you have a better understanding of what the working environment is really like.
