Is This a Plum?
Dan and Finn Ojari
Oscar-nominated director and writer Ojari worked with his 8-year-old son Finn on Is This a Plum?, after a joint drawing session when they realised that a plum looks quite a bit like a hippo’s bum. Their idea snowballed and became a book project, and the resulting title starts with a picture of a plum alongside the question posed in the title. When, however, you turn the page, you see that, no, the picture is actually a large, purple bottom belonging to a hippo. And so this witty book, filled with die-cut pages, continues, with a spider turning out to be a tiger, a house a mouse, a goose a moose and so on. At the end, the Ojaris once again ask: “Is this a plum?” and, rather satisfyingly this time, it is indeed a plum. On the final spread, the hippo, bear, goose and more assemble under the light of the moon. Dan Ojari is one of the creators of the Robin Robin animation and the accompanying picture book, and with Is This a Plum? Ojari shows that he is a talented new star on the picture book scene. Is This a Plum? is a clever, rhyming title, and its humour and rhymes will delight both toddlers and their parents.
