Khadivi is the author of the Kurdish Trilogy: The Age of Orphans, The Walking and A Good Country, and chairs the University of San Francisco MFA writing programme. She moves to Oneworld with this novel, acquired in a six-figure auction. Heti is an LA mother, mourning her resilient immigrant mother, when she receives an anonymous package of photographs of her – young, armed, in Muslim fundamentalist garb, standing in front of burning buildings. A year later, Heti hosts the customary party commemorating her mother, and gets some answers. Lyrical and startlingly funny, it asks how much of our mothers we can ever know.
