Hodder & Stoughton is publishing Off the Page, the teen novel by Jodi Picoult and her daughter Samantha Van Leer, with additional augmented reality (AR) content, thanks to technology developed by UK-based Zappar.
The book is a romantic story about Delilah, a high school student, and Oliver, a fairy tale prince, and has "zap" codes embedded in the book, allowing users to download additional content on their smartphones. Readers will be able to access a photo feature that allows them to “pose” next to the origami paper characters from the front of the book, then share the pictures of social media. They will also be able to enter a competition to win vouchers for high-street clothes chain Zara.
A Zappar spokesperson said: “Augmented reality is a brilliant way to add a new dimension to storytelling for all age groups but works really nicely with Off the Page. We hope our technology will help readers get something more from the fantastic story and have had proven successes with many YA audiences previously (who are avid consumers of content and always looking for that little extra).”
Hodder & Stoughton will publish tomorrow (4th June).
