Yellow Kite is publishing Into the Magic Shop by Dr James Doty - "a neurosurgeon's true story of the life-changing magic of compassion and mindfulness".
The book tells the story of how Doty as a young boy, struggling to find a direction in life, found meditation and mindfulness by a chance meeting - through the mother of a magic shop owner - which changed his life. Doty went onto study at Stanford University and become director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, which he co-founded with the Dalai Lama. The book is "part memoir, part science, part inspiration and part practical instruction".
Publisher Liz Gough bought UK and Commonwealth rights for the Hodder & Stoughton imprint from Sabila Khan, rights director at Penguin US. The book is being published by Avery in the US.
Gough said: "Like Tuesdays with Morrie this is one of those books that stays with you long after you’ve finished reading it. As readers we take from it a powerful message of hope and an understanding that if we want to improve or enhance our lives in some way, it has to come from within, and that we all have our own ‘magic shop’ inside us whereby we can change our brains and our hearts - and our destiny. Dr Doty opens the door on this magic world of mindfulness and compassion and teaches us inspirational life lessons we will never forget."
Doty added: "With my book I hope to open people’s minds to the power of compassion and mindfulness, and to inspire in them a willingness to think about what it means to live wholeheartedly. I am delighted that my book is being published by Yellow Kite in the UK."
