World Book Day is launching a fundraising initiative with Book Aid International, with independent booksellers and book groups being encouraged to hold a "Meet, Talk, Give" event to raise money for the charity. World Book Day spokesman Matt Railton said it was for regular or casual book groups to hold reading events and bring donations, and emphasised the role of independent booksellers in holding events as well.
The events could involve cake sales, book quizzes or other fundraising activities. He said: "It's very important for booksellers to get involved and organise their own events, hold events in their shops. We will be sending out information packs explaining how they can get involved."
Anne Race, events and community fundraiser at Book Aid International, said: "This is a wonderfully simple way to celebrate reading with friends while supporting the gift of literature in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond."
Book Aid International distributes books to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, with £2 covering the cost of sending a book.
