The Works sales approach £100m

<p>Bargain book chain The Works has reported sales topping &pound;96 million for the year to end-April 2006 as it aims to continue expanding and building brand awareness. Revenue for the period jumped 4.2% to &pound;96.3m from &pound;92.3m. But costs also rose, and operating profit declined by 34% to &pound;3.2m from &pound;4.3m, while profit after tax fell to &pound;2.1m from &pound;3m.</p><p>In a statement the company said: &quot;There are significant brand opportunities within the business for greater brand awareness, new stores, new product innovation, improvement in the supply chain and increasing margins.&quot;</p><p>The Works is the largest bargain book chain in the UK. It is the preferred bidder for the David Flatman chain, a deal expected to conclude by the end of March that will bring its total number of stores in the UK to more than 300.</p>
