William Heinemann has bought a new novel by Nicola Barker.
In a joint deal William Heinemann publisher Jason Arthur and Michael Signorelli, at Henry Holt in New York bought The Cauliflower® from David Miller at Rogers, Coleridge & White Ltd.
Arthur said: "I have wanted to publish Nicola Barker for as long as I have been publishing fiction, so it gives the greatest pleasure to welcome her to William Heinemann. She is one of this country's great novelists and this new book plays to her many strengths - it is ambitious, clever, audacious, joyful and utterly unique."
Barker’s previous work has won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, a PEN Award, the Dublin IMPAC Literary Award and the Hawthornden Prize, and she was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Darkmans.
Barker has previously been published by Faber and Fourth Estate, with her entire backlist currently available in the UK from Fourth Estate and, in the USA, from Open Road.
Miller said: “The Cauliflower® delighted everyone who read it, there was a huge amount of interest in publishing Nicola, and the contest for her was superbly well argued by all. It is great to know Nicola's work will attract new audiences not just here, but internationally."
The Cauliflower® will be published in the UK in the spring of 2016.
