Wildfire pre-empts 'romp through humankind's cock-ups'

Wildfire has acquired Humans: A Brief History of How We F*cked It All Up, by Tom Phillips, former editorial director of Buzzfeed.

"This brilliant satirical book is an exhilarating journey through the most creative and catastrophic f*ck ups in human history, from our earliest ancestors’ ineptitude to the most spectacular fails of the present day", said the publisher.

From Chairman Mao’s Four Pests Campaign, to the sinking of the Titanic; from the American Dustbowl, to the world’s leading superpower electing a reality TV mogul as President, the book aims to "definitively show that, as a species, we haven’t exactly grown wiser with age".

Editorial director Kate Stephenson acquired world rights from Antony Topping at Greene and Heaton. The book was pre-empted in Germany, Lithuania and the Netherlands within 24 hours of submission.

Headline rights director Jason Bartholomew said: "We’re absolutely thrilled to be selling World rights for Humans. The timing is perfect for two key reasons: the world needs laughter at the moment, and this book surely delivers on the humour. It is also huge fun to have such a saleable book leading into LBF. We have already accepted pre-empts in three key territories, and counting..."

Stephenson said: "We laughed out loud when we read Tom’s hilarious proposal and knew we had to have this book on the Wildfire list. Tom delivers wit and warmth to this totally bizarre – and genuinely fascinating – romp through humankind’s cock-ups."

Phillips added: "The team at Wildfire have been wonderful to work with, and I can't wait for people to read the finished product. Based on my extensive research into millennia of human failure in all its forms, I am extremely confident that nothing can possibly go wrong."

Wildfire will publish in trade paperback in July this year, to be followed with a paperback publication in Spring 2019.
