Waterstone's and Borders have come out top among bookshops in a shopping survey conducted by consumer magazine Which?
Waitrose was top of the high street, with a customer satisfaction score of 84%. Waterstone's was joint eighth overall, alongside budget supermarket Lidl, scoring 69% and Borders came joint 14th with the Body Shop and toy retailer IND, scoring 64%.
However, within the entertainment category, including bookshops and CD, DVD and videogame retailers, it was the independent sector that came out on top, with a customer satisfaction score of 71%. "Staff tend to take exceptional trouble to advise on products," said the magazine. Waterstone's was described as "a great place to browse, with staff often deemed to take an interest". The Books Etc chain came fourth in that category with a score of 56%.
There was worse news for W H Smith, who came last in the entertainment category. It had a score of 42%. One member told the magazine: "I only shop there because my aunt gives me gift tokens —I think they are truly terrible in every way."
