The Prince’s Foundation charity and non-fiction children's indie What on Earth Publishing have partnered to release an "exciting and important" book about climate change, featuring a foreword by Prince Charles.
The book, It's Up to Us: A Children’s Terra Carta for Nature, People & Planet, is illustrated by 33 artists from around the world, and is written by world history author Christopher Lloyd in collaboration with the Prince’s Foundation and the Sustainable Markets Initiative, which aims to foster climate-focused progress at an industry and country-wide level. The book begins with an introduction to nature, moving on to the threats the planet faces, finishing with an action plan for the future.
It’s Up To Us will be published in the UK by What on Earth Books on 1st November, and will be launched to coincide with the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, to be held in Glasgow from 31st October to 12th November 2021. The book will be published in the US by What on Earth Publishing on 1st February 2022.
The UK edition of the book will be printed on recycled paper using vegetable-based inks. Each unit will clearly state how much CO2 was emitted in its production.
An extensive joint marketing and publicity campaign between the publisher and the foundation will accompany the book, including exhibitions of the illustrations at venues such as Dumfries House, where the foundation has its headquarters, as well as a campaign of donations of books to schools across the UK. These will be distributed alongside teaching resources developed by the charity's education team. Half of all proceeds will go to the charity to support its work.
Simon Sadinsky, executive director of the Prince's Foundation, said: “Sustainability sits at the very heart of the Prince's Foundation so we are delighted to be collaborating with What on Earth Publishing and the Sustainable Markets Initiative on It's Up to Us. The book, and the story it tells, comes at a very important moment: our climate is changing, our forests and animal habitats are under threat and our oceans are being polluted. As a charity, we strive to find the best possible ways to help bring nature, people and the planet back into balance and we are very much looking forward to sharing this exciting and important publication with children all over the world to help inspire them to put the planet first."
Christopher Lloyd, c.e.o. at What on Earth Publishing, added: “The story of how humans have upset the harmony of nature, putting the future of our planet in peril, is the most important ever told. Activating young people to persuade others to put nature first is vital if we are to succeed in helping combat climate change. That’s why we are so thrilled to be partnering with HRH Prince of Wales and the Prince’s Foundation to tell this story in the most accessible, beautiful and engaging way possible.”
