The Stolen Child's dark magic to W&N

Lisa Carey's story about dark magic, superstition and remote island life has been snapped up by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.

The Stolen Cild follows two sisters - one blessed, one cursed - on St Brigid’s Island, an isolated community in decline off the west coast of Ireland.

Publishing director at Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Arzu Tahsin, bought UK and Commonwealth rights at auction from Gráinne Fox at Fletcher and Company, New York, whilst US rights have sold to Perennial, HarperCollins. The Stolen Child is scheduled for publication in the UK in January 2017.

Tahsin said: “This is the enchanting and disconcerting story of an isolated community living on St Brigid’s island, off the west coast of Ireland.  A brooding atmosphere full of such underlying menace that I couldn’t stop turning the pages. Island life – the isolation, close ties of community, mistrust, dark magic and superstition – are all perfectly realised. Imagine The Snow Child written by Sarah Waters or Angela Carter.”

Carey is also the author of the critically acclaimed The Mermaid's Singing.
