Waterstone's plans praised

Publishers have given a warm welcome to the planned changes to Waterstone's estate and marketing activities which were announced late last week by acting managing director Brian McLaughlin.</p><p>

The chain plans to close eight under-performing branches, invest &#163;10m over 12 months on store refurbishments, and, as predicted in the The Bookseller (News, 27th April), review its e-commerce business. It said that wherever possible, staff from the closed shops would be re-deployed within the company.</p><p>
