Waterstones is set to close one of two shops in Huddersfield as the lease has come to an end.
The company’s site in New Street will close by the end of this month but its Kingsgate shopping centre store will stay open.
Staff at the New Street shop will transfer to the Kingsgate or Wakefield stores so no jobs are expected to be lost.
Waterstones managing director James Daunt told The Bookseller that the New Street shop had “extremely high rent” and “a landlord that doesn’t want to make the shop profitable for us to stay there.”
He added: “There is another shop five minutes walk away. We would have kept both open but not if the high rent means one would not be making a profit.”
The company added that its Wakefield store had become “much busier” since its successful refit at the end of last year.
The last store Waterstones closed was in Liverpool’s Bold Street, which was half a mile from the company’s other store in the city, Liverpool One.
Watestones opened its first new location since 2008 in Ringwood, Hampshire, last month.
