Mardle Books publisher Jo Sollis has acquired Suzanne Walsh's "heartbreaking" memoir, Vow of Silence, as the new Ad Lib imprint's first title.
Sollis made a deal for world English language rights, including audio, with the author's daughter Melissa Walsh. The memoir will be published posthumously on 16th September 2021.
The author's childhood became the "stuff of nightmares" after her father passed away and her mother, unable to get a job in Ireland, had to seek work in London. Her mother was forced into the decision to put Walsh and her five siblings into church-run orphanages in Dublin while she worked away, after which their lives became a "daily struggle".
Sollis said: "We were all moved by this very powerful memoir of a life touched by the pain of abuse and misplaced trust. We are privileged to be able to help Melissa bring her mother's story out of the shadows."
Melissa Walsh commented: "I’m so happy and grateful to be working with Mardle Books to publish my wonderful mum’s book. It was her last wish to get her story out there and try to help other survivors. I’m so proud of her and just wish she could be here to see it. Thank you Mardle Books for making our dreams come true."
