Walker Books has launched an Indian imprint, saying it believes that the subcontinent is "an increasingly vital market" for English-language children's fiction.
Walker India, launched officially this week, will focus on fiction titles for children from the age of seven up to young adult. Walker said it is "keen to show a commitment" to the market and it hopes this initiative will maximise sales for this genre in India.
The first line-up of titles‚ to be distributed by Pan Macmillan, includes the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz; Danger by Moonlight by Jamila Gavin; Dollop of Ghee and Pot of Wisdom by Chitra Soundar; Sold by Patricia McCormick; and Anila's Journey by Mary Finn.
For the 2011 list, Jamila Gavin's Three Indian Princesses and Three Indian Goddesses will be published simultaneously for the first time in India and the UK.
Paul Gill, head of export at Walker, said: "This is a thrilling step for Walker in its 30th year. We aim to provide the Indian market with a series of collectable and exciting titles, branded with the Walker India logo, from 2010 onwards.
"Walker India will be a range of books instantly distinguishable by the new logo‚ that parents and children will perceive as quality and fun that also encourages reading and learning in English."
Walker's international portfolio also includes Candlewick Press in the US and Walker Australia.
