W H Smith's sales continue to fall

<p>W H Smith&#39;s high street store sales have dropped 4% and sales at its travel stores have declined by 4% in the 14 weeks since the end of its last financial period, according to a trading update.<br /><br />In the 14 weeks to 5th June total group sales were down 3% with like-for-like sales down 4% compared to the same period last year. The retailer also reported like-for-like sales down 4% in the six months to 28th February.</p><p>WHS said the drop at its travel stores would have been 2% had it not been for the impact of the volcanic ash earlier this year. &quot;Whilst airport passenger numbers have, as expected, remained soft, we continue to outperform,&quot; the statement said. </p><p> WHS added: &quot;The economic environment remains uncertain and whilst we continue to be cautious about consumer spending, we remain confident in the outcome for the full year.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>WHS also announced the appointment of Walker Boyd as non-executive chairman and the retirement of Robert Walker, the current non-executive chairman.</p>
