W H Smith to support Harrogate crime award

W H Smith is to support the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award, in a three-year partnership with Harrogate International Festivals.

The partnership will include a month-long nationwide campaign in 600 W H Smith bookshops for the crime fiction award longlist, announced on 7th May. A second month-long campaign will follow the announcement of the shortlist on 1st July.

The overall winner is decided by a judging panel plus a public vote.

Karl O'Leary, head of advertising and events at W H Smith, said: "Crime is the biggest selling genre and this award represents the best novels within that. We're thrilled to support such a prestigious award. It really is a perfect partnership in crime fiction. When you consider that we sell in excess of 30 million books a year, we believe we can really get the nation involved voting for their favourite novel to win."

Sharon Canavar, c.e.o. of Harrogate International Festivals, called the partnership with W H Smith "a fantastic fit for the award" and "also great news for the crime fiction genre as a whole".

Title sponsor Simon Theakston, executive director of T&R Theakston, said the partnership "will no doubt boost even further the excitement and awareness of this annual award".

The winner of the £3,000 prize will be announced on the opening night of the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate on 18th July.
