Virago Modern Classics has acquired two novels by the late Angela Thirkell, known for her 1930s novels set in the fictional English countryside of Barsetshire.
Commissioning editor Rowan Cope acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in two novels, High Rising and Wild Strawberries, through Peter Buckman of the Ampersand Agency, Oxfordshire, representing the Angela Thirkell Estate.
Thirkell wrote more than 30 novels, and VMC plans to publish its two titles in winter 2012.
Cope said Little, Brown publisher David Shelley had already been a fan of the author, and likened her books to those of Stella Gibbons, Barbara Pym and P G Wodehouse. She said: “It’s really exciting. You start reading the books and you are immediately tucked away on a journey into the English countryside, through country lanes, with broken engagements, scandals, real 1930s romance.”
