Virgin Books has bought a book that goes behind the scenes of the digital gaming phenomenon Minecraft.
Ed Faulkner and Yvonne Jacob signed UK and Commonwealth rights to Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus 'Notch' Persson and the Game that Changed Everything by Daniel Goldberg and Linus Larsson from Silvia Stramenga at Seven Stories Press, New York.
Minecraft is a digital version of Lego where players stack bricks and build structures. Since it was released in 2009, it has attracted over 35 million regular gamers and six million fans on Facebook. Thousands of fans gather at global Minecraft conventions every year and millions manage their own Minecraft servers.
Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus 'Notch' Persson and the Game that Changed Everything, which was originally published in Sweden, reveals how a bored IT developer saw his passion become a global hit.
Jacob said: "I’m incredibly excited to be working on this piece of cutting-edge non-fiction. Minecraft has been described as a modern day Cinderella story for the digital age and this book is a fascinating glimpse into its success."
Egmont's Minecraft Annual 2014 is currently at number nine in the UK Official Top 50.
