Virgin Books has acquired a title from Silicon Valley technology entrepreneur and investor, Peter Thiel.
UK and Commonwealth rights in Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Thiel and Blake Masters were signed by Virgin Books publishing director Ed Faulkner from Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein on behalf of Chris Parris-Lamb at The Gernert Company. Virgin Books will publish simultaneously with Crown in the US in March 2014.
Thiel is the co-founder of PayPal and the first outside investor in Facebook. The title is inspired by a course he taught at Stanford University for software engineers. Blake Masters was a student who sparked an internet sensation when he posted lecture notes on his blog.
The title will be part practical business advice and part philosophy, and share “powerful insights from Silicon Valley”.
"I’m writing this book because we need to think about the future for more than just 140 characters or 15 minutes at a time if we want to make real long-term progress,” Thiel said.
“I believe the best way to make the entire world a better place is to start a company that goes from 'zero to one', creating new solutions instead of copying old models. Zero to One is about learning from Silicon Valley how to solve hard problems and build great things that have never existed before."
