Virgin Books has acquired a new title about the science behind winning family and board games by Tom Whipple, science editor at the Times.
How to Win Games and Beat People includes advice from various experts, for example a racing driver who explains how to take a corner in Scalextric, an engineer who advises on building the perfect paper aeroplane, and a game theorist who reveals what properties players of Monopoly should buy to bankrupt their competitors.
Senior commissioning editor Jamie Joseph, who bought the world rights from Sarah Williams at the Sophie Hicks Agency, said: “I’ve been telling everyone I know about this project and they’ve all had the same reaction: it’s a brilliant idea for a book. Tom is the perfect person to write it, drawing on his incredible network of scientific contacts and delivering it in playful, light, prose. This book will stand out as a smart gift book for anyone who takes games too seriously and bad losers everywhere.”
Virgin Book will publish How to Win Games and Beat People in hardback in September with an r.r.p. of £9.99.
