Virgin acquires "definitive" Lennon biog

Virgin Books has acquired a "definitive" biography of John Lennon, to be published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of his 1971 song Imagine.

Virgin Books publishing director Ed Faulkner acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Lennon: The Man, the Myth, the Music: A Definitive Life by Tim Riley from Hyperion rights director, Jill Sansone.

Music historian and journalist Tim Riley took 10 years to write the 800-page title, which explores Lennon as "the misogynist turned peace activist, the moralist who loved to outrage" according to the publisher. "[Riley] also writes brilliantly about the music and about Lennon’s artistic and creative processes."

The title will include 50 photographs, including several rare snaps of him as a child, a previously unpublished photo of Lennon in his band the Quarrymen, and rare and unpublished photos from the 1970s.

Lennon will be published as a £25 royal hardback in September 2011.
