Virago has partnered with The Feminist Bookshop in Brighton to host quarterly ‘Virago Speakeasy’ events celebrating authors and readers, with the first taking place in May.
To mark Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week (2nd-8th May) authors Jessica Cornwell (Birth Notes) and Kate Maxwell (Hush) will “crowdsource advice for new parents” in a talk entitled What I Didn’t Know about Motherhood. In August Brighton’s Pride march will be celebrated with a graphic self-portraiture workshop, Coming Out on the Page, run by illustrator Eleanor Crewes (The Times I Knew I Was Gay).
In November, an event with Irenosen Okojie (Hag: Forgotten Folk Tales Retold) and Chibundu Onuzo (Sankofa) said to challenge the canon for Black History Month by championing the Black women on the Virago Modern Classics list will take place.
Rose Tomaszewska, editorial director at Virago, said: “When I moved to Brighton in 2021, I was so impressed at the community and outreach Ruth and the team had built, even during lockdown. They were excited about working with Virago and have been wonderful to collaborate with.”
Ruth Wainwright, founder of The Feminist Bookshop, added that Virago had always been a dream partner. “We are incredibly proud to be hosting this fantastic series of events,” she said. Tickets for each event will be £10 and include a drink.
