Three of Elizabeth Taylor’s books have been added to the Virago Modern Classics designer hardback list.
With covers by textile designer Celia Birtwell, the three novels in the list are Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont, introduced by Paul Bailey, which tells the story of an elderly widowed woman who moves into the Claremont Hotel to live out her remaining days; Angel, introduced by Hilary Mantel, about an aspiring teenage author whose passionate writing is at odds with her plain demeanour; and A View from the Harbour introduced by Sarah Waters, about a divorcee in a sleepy coastal village who falls in love with her best friend’s husband.
Virago editor Donna Coonan called Elizabeth Taylor a “jewel” of the Virago Modern Classics list, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008 by re-jacketing eight of its classics with designs by women textile designers including Cath Kidston, Orla Kiely and Lucienne Day.
Elizabeth Taylor’s A Game of Hide and Seek was in the original set and Coonan wanted to pair more of her books with designs by Celia Birtwell, whom she called “a hugely inspirational woman".
The three titles are published on 14th November at £12.99.
