Viper snares Griffin’s 'glorious' gothic standalone

Viper has landed Fyneshade, a "wonderful gothic tale of dark secrets" by Kitty Peck Mysteries author Kate Griffin.

Set in the 1890's, the new standalone tells the story of Marta, an enigmatic woman who discovers she will be sent away from her home on the day she buries her beloved grandmother, leaving the aunt who despises her and the man she has been forbidden to marry.

The synopsis states: "She is to be governess at Fyneshade Hall, her charge the young daughter of the owner, Sir William Pritchard. But all is not well at Fyneshade. Sir William never stirs from his room, and his son and heir Vaughn Pritchard is forbidden to enter the house. Marta finds herself drawn to him, despite the warnings of the housekeeper, Mrs Petrie, that Vaughn is a danger to all around him. But Marta is no innocent to be preyed upon. Guided by the dark gift taught to her by her grandmother, she has made her own plans. And it will take more than a family riven by murderous secrets to stop her."

Miranda Jewess, editorial director at the Serpent’s Tail crime imprint, acquired UK, Commonwealth and audio rights to the thriller from Eugenie Furniss at 42 M&P. It will be published in May 2023.

Commenting on acquisition, Jewess said: "Fyneshade introduces the reader to the brilliant character of Marta, a glorious antidote to the traditional Victorian heroine. While it may appear that Marta has plenty to fear from the inhabitants of Fyneshade Hall, they’d be well advised to be scared of her! It’s a wonderful gothic tale of dark secrets with a twist – The Talented Mr Ripley by way of Jane Eyre – and I’m so pleased that Kate will be published by Viper."

Griffin added: "In less than two years Viper has established itself as a brilliant and darkly inventive new voice in publishing. It is an absolute thrill to join its eclectic band of welcoming, wonderful and fiendishly clever authors."
