Vintage chooses winning cover for Secret Garden

Vintage Classics has chosen a "simple but intriguing" design as the winning artwork for its annual cover design competition for children. Emma Brink-Morrison, aged eight when she entered the competition in the summer, has won for her design for this year's book, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Her design will be on the cover of the new Vintage Classics Edition, to be published on 4th November.

Brink-Morrison, from Oxford, said: "I love The Secret Garden because the gardens are very big and beautiful and the story seems so true. I would like to be an illustrator when I'm older. When I won I felt surprised but excited and happy too. I read the book first and I loved it."

The competition is for entrants between the ages of seven and 12, and is run in conjunction with the Young Times and Random House Children's Books. Promoted through bookshops, libraries and schools, the panel of five judges, including Dame Jacqueline Wilson and illustrator Katie Clemison, had almost 300 entries to choose from.

Wilson said: "This was the best design for the cover because it's simple but intriguing, and it's certainly a very good robin. Ask anybody who has read The Secret Garden and they will talk about the robin. He shows Mary the way into the secret garden and it's just a perfect symbol for the whole book."

Clemison said: "It was a joyful moment when all the cover designs were spread out on the table for us to judge . . . it was difficult to choose, but I think our winning cover looks fantastic."

Brink-Morrison receives 10 copies of the book featuring her illustration and £100 worth of Random House Children's Books of her choice. The two runners-up, Emily Parker, 10, and Amrita Robertson, 11, win £50 worth and £30 worth respectively of books from RH Children's Books.
