Viking has acquired world rights to a modern art title by BBC arts editor Will Gompertz.
Editor Ben Brusey bought What Are You Looking At?: The Surprising Story of Modern Art directly from the author, with Viking to publish in spring 2012.
Brusey said: "Will Gompertz is the perfect tour guide for Modern Art. With wonderful humour and down-to-earth storytelling, he brings to life a subject that can often seem intimidating, and asks all of the questions, big and small, that many of us will have asked and been puzzled by."
He added: "He's a tremendous performer, and for publication will be reprising his sell-out 2009 Edinburgh Fringe stand-up comedy show, Double Art History, which he will be performing in London and in New York. I'm incredibly excited to be publishing Will's first book, and I think it will be a classic of its kind."
Gompertz was a director at Tate for seven years, and currently writes, presents and produces a number of programmes about the arts for BBC News, "Newsnight" and Radio 4. From spring 2011, he will be regularly appearing on the "Culture Show".
He was voted one of the world's top 50 creative thinkers by New York-based Creativity Magazine.
