Orion has bought two historical novels by Valerie Mendes, mother of film director Sam Mendes, from David Headley at DHH Literary Agency.
Publisher Kate Mills bought world rights in the novels, with plans to publish the first, Larkswood, in early 2014. The title tells the story of the Hamilton family and how in the glorious summer of 1896, disaster strikes the family and leaves it divided. Decades later, on the eve of the Second World War, Louisa Hamilton is sent back to Larkswood and begins to unravel the series of events which shattered the family years before.
Mills said: "This is a very impressive debut. Immensely readable, immaculately researched, it captures the period beautifully while delivering a thoroughly gripping mystery. It's one of those books that made me sit up a bit straighter after the first few pages."
