Usborne has bought a LGBTQ+ YA love story by US author Meredith Russo.
Birthday, described by Usborne as YA’s answer to One Day, is about best friends Morgan and Eric and is told in six years of snapshots on their birthdays.
Commissioning editor Stephanie King, who acquired the English language, UK and Commonwealth rights: said: “Birthday is a profoundly moving book, depicting the deep, complicated and fierce relationship between two perfectly drawn characters, and a story about the courageous, transformative power of love. Meredith Russo is a true star.”
Usborne is also the publisher of Russo’s first novel, If I Was Your Girl, which was based on the author’s experiences as a trans woman. It sold more than 50,000 copies and was chosen for WHSmith’s Zoella Book Club in 2016.
King struck the deal for Birthday with Charlotte Bodman at Rights People, who was acting on behalf of Alloy Entertainment, and will publish on 30th May 2019.
