Minneapolis-based Lerner Publishing Group has acquired nearly 100 Egmont USA titles, following Egmont’s decision to close its US office.
Lerner said it has published Egmont’s remaining US assets, including books by Ilsa J Bick, Patrick Jennings, Jon and Pamela Voelkel, Lex Thomas and Len Vlahos. The titles will be incorporated into Lerner’s imprints including Carolrhoda Books, Carolrhoda Lab, Darby Creek, and Millbrook Press.
“I am delighted to be able to confirm that we have found a home for our authors with one of the US’s largest independently owned children’s publishers,” Rob McMenemy, c.e.o. of Egmont Publishing International, said in a statement. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our authors and agents for their support during this transition.”
Andrea Cascardi, publisher and m.d. of Egmont USA, and Margaret Coffee, sales and marketing director, will remain at the company until the 30th April to oversee the transition to Lerner.
Egmont closed its US business last month after plans to sell the division failed.
The company wanted to offload Egmont USA because it didn’t have market leading position in the country.
McMenemy said last year Egmont will from now on operate in countries where it is one of the top three children's publishers.
Egmont USA is "tiny" and "we had no realistic proposition of changing that", he said.
