US book market hit by 'disappointing' August

<p>The US book market continues to outperform the UK, according to new preliminary estimates from the US Census Bureau.</p><p>Publishers Weekly reports sales fell at their largest rate in the United States in August, down 6.5% to $2.29bn. PW described the figures as &quot;disappointing&quot;, given how August is when students spend heavily in college bookstores.</p><p>For the first eight months of 2010, book sales were down 2.0%, to $10.79 billion. According to Nielsen BookScan figures. for the year to 4th September, the UK book market declined by 2.6%.</p>
